How to Choose the Right PCB Laminate Material
Selecting the right PCB laminate is a system-level decision that affects signal integrity, thermal reliability, manufacturability, and cost. The key parameters are Dk (dielectric constant), Df (dissipation factor), Tg (glass transition temperature), Td (decomposition temperature), and Z-axis CTE.
For high-speed digital designs (PCIe Gen5, DDR5, 112G SerDes), Df is the primary criterion. Standard FR-4 (Df > 0.015) suits designs under 5 Gbps. For 10–25 Gbps, mid-loss materials like Shengyi S1150GH, ITEQ IT-170GRA1, or Isola FR408HR provide the right balance. For 56–112G channels, ultra-low-loss materials like Isola Tachyon 100G or TUC TU-901 become necessary.
Always verify parameters against the manufacturer's latest datasheet, as Dk and Df vary with frequency, temperature, and resin content. QueenEMS supports manufacturing with all materials listed above — contact our engineering team for stack-up optimization and DFM review.
